Perhaps we’ve misunderstood what it means to find our purpose.
We imagine there is an answer hidden somewhere.
One profound calling.
One moment when everything suddenly makes sense.
But perhaps purpose is simpler than that.
All that you are and all that you’ve known and all that you’ve been through has culminated in the creation of someone completely unique.
There is no one else on earth like you.
Your mind.
Your experiences.
Your interests.
Your struggles.
All of it becomes something uniquely yours to give.
Don’t leave the world with all of it still inside you.
Give it away.
All of it.
All of the gifts you’ve been given.
Spend it all.
Build something.
Teach something.
Love someone.
Help someone.
Create something that wasn’t here before you arrived.
Your purpose isn’t written in the stars.
It’s written in the lives that are better because you lived.
Don’t spend your whole life asking:
“What can I get?”
Ask:
“What can I give that only I can give?”
Find something you love.
Become extraordinarily good at it.
Then use it to make somebody else’s brief experience of being alive better.
Solve a problem.
Create something beautiful.
Make people laugh.
Teach what you’ve learned.
Build something useful.
Help someone who is where you once were.
You do not need to change the entire world.
Perhaps changing one small corner of it is enough.
Because one day, everything you accumulated will belong to somebody else.
The money.
The house.
The possessions.
But what you gave away can continue travelling long after you are gone.
An idea can outlive you.
A lesson can outlive you.
Kindness can pass from one person to another for generations.
So discover what is uniquely yours.
Develop it.
Use it.
And then give as much of it away as you possibly can.
Because perhaps the measure of a life isn’t how much of the world you managed to possess…
but how much of yourself you managed to leave behind.
