Choose again

Mary Shelley

The beginning is always today. One decision. One commitment. One new start. You cannot change the past. But today you can choose goodness. And what you keep choosing, you become.” ~ Mary Shelley

We sometimes imagine character as something we are born with.

But character is built.

It is built in the decisions we make.

And the choice to keep doing what is right.

You become honest by telling the truth.

Kind by choosing kindness.

Courageous by doing what frightens you.

Grateful by noticing what you already have.

And none of these choices seem particularly important at the time.

They are a part of every ordinary day.

That’s the beautiful part.

You still have that chance.

To become what you know you can become.

One good decision at a time.

Which brings us to today’s lesson…

Never believe you are permanently defined by the person you have been.

You are defined by what you choose to do next.

Take the lessons.

Keep the scars.

Forgive yourself for not knowing then what life had not yet taught you.

And choose again.

Choose honesty.

Choose courage.

Choose kindness when nobody deserves it.

Choose hope when cynicism would be easier.

Choose to become a little better before the sun goes down.

Because eventually, there will be no more days left to choose who you become…

But that day is not today.

Today, the door is still open.

Today, the story is still being written.

Today, you still have the extraordinary privilege of deciding what kind of person walks into tomorrow.

Keep choosing until the life behind you finally resembles the person you always hoped to become.
