The beginning is always today

You cannot go back and make a different decision with what you know now. But you can take everything the past taught you and make a better decision with the day in front of you. The beginning is always today.” ~ Mary Shelley

There is a cruelty in hindsight.

It gives you the wisdom only after you needed it.

You look back and think:

I should have known.

I should have started sooner.

But of course you know better now.

The mistakes taught you.

The years taught you.

The past has already taken enough of your time.

Don’t give it today as well.

Which brings us to today’s lesson.

There is only one place where your life can still be changed…

Here.

There is only one moment in which you can make a different choice.

Now.

So take everything you’ve learned and use it.

Forgive.

Apologize.

Leave what needs leaving.

Become a little more like the person you now know you want to be.

You may have lost years to mistakes.

Everyone does.

Don’t lose this day mourning them.

You may have made bad choices.

You are still holding the pen.

Today you get to choose what you will do next.

And perhaps that’s the extraordinary mercy of being alive:

Until your final day, life keeps giving you another place from which to begin.

Not yesterday.

Not someday.

Today.

The beginning is always today.
