Slow down

Doris Lessing

Whenever you feel yourself becoming impatient, remember this: rushing rarely saves time. More often, it creates mistakes that need to be corrected later. A few extra thoughtful minutes today can spare you hours of regret tomorrow.” ~ Doris Lessing

The world is always trying to make us move faster.

The angry driver behind you trying to make you drive faster.

The boss trying to make you work faster.

We’ve been trained to believe that moving quickly means getting more done.

And that ‘more’ is synonymous with ‘better’.

But it isn’t.

The people who produce the best work don’t let the world push them around.

Experience teaches them something impatience can’t.

The fastest way to reach your destination is to stop rushing.

Because every careless step takes you from the most direct path to your goal.

Every shortcut creates another problem to solve later.

Every rushed conversation becomes another misunderstanding to untangle.

Which brings us to today’s lesson…

Life is not a race to the finish.

Don’t rush through the very thing you wish you had more of.

One careful, considered step today can take you further than a hundred hurried ones.

People don’t look back on life wishing they had rushed to the end…

They wish they had paid more attention.

They wish they had spent more time on the things they cared about.

Slow is not the opposite of progress.

Carelessness is.

The world will keep telling you to hurry.

Don’t let it.

Slow down.

Focus carefully on one thing at a time.

Build great things.

Be present.

A better life is built one thoughtful decision at a time.

So too is a better world.
