Stay focused

Tom Hardy

Stay focused. This is the simplest advice you will ever hear. And the hardest advice you will ever follow. ~

Life will constantly try to steal your attention.

Your phone will buzz.

A new TV show will appear.

Videos of pandas rolling down hills will steal an hour of your day.

It would be funny if it wasn’t so expensive.

Because attention is life.

Whatever receives your attention receives your days.

Your days become your years.

And your years become your life.

Most people say they want to achieve great things.

But what they really want is to watch TV night after night until they die.

You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.

People don’t fail because they lack talent.

They fail because they can’t stay focused.

They have a hundred ideas but no commitment.

They switch direction every time something becomes difficult or something easier looks more exciting.

The people who achieve extraordinary things often have one unusual ability…

They can ignore.

They can ignore distractions.

Ignore opinions.

Ignore temporary pleasures.

Ignore the endless invitations from the world to be somewhere other than where they are…

They understand that every time they say yes to something unimportant, they are saying no to something important.

A good life is easy. A great life requires sacrifice.

Every meaningful achievement costs something.

A book costs thousands of hours.

A healthy body costs discipline.

A dream costs years of consistent effort.

The problem is the price is paid daily, while the reward arrives much later.

And that is where most people quit.

They want the reward without paying the ordinary daily cost.

They want the mountain view without the climb.

Which brings us to today’s lesson…

Decide what matters most.

Then protect it like your life depends on it.

Because in many ways, it does.

Your older self would do anything to come back to where you are now and do everything properly.

To make the most of every day.

To spend their time on what they knew matters most instead of spending it distracted.

One day, you will look back at the thousands of ordinary days that made up your life.

You won’t remember a single one of the hundreds of hours of online videos, or Netflix binges.

But you will live with the consequences of what you chose to focus on.

Great lives aren’t built by people who had more time.

They are built by people who decided what deserved their time.

So stay focused.

Your life is being built by whatever you pay attention to today.
