The thing that keeps calling you

Joseph Campbell

If you want to know your purpose, pay attention to what stays with you — the ideas you can’t forget, the things you return to even when they’re difficult, the work that refuses to let you go. That’s your soul speaking.” ~ Joseph Campbell

Pay attention to what follows you through life:

The idea that appears when you’re walking.

The subject you keep reading about.

The thing you’re naturally good at.

People spend their lives waiting for certainty.

Waiting for a sign.

What if the sign has been there all along?

Subtly asking for your attention.

Year after year.

People ignore that voice.

They choose what is sensible.

Year after year.

And they wake up decades later wondering why something feels missing.

Because they abandoned the part of themselves that was trying to come alive.

Which brings us to today’s lesson.

Do not ignore the thing that refuses to leave you alone.

The book you want to write.

The business you want to build.

The problem you want to solve.

The way you want to make the world better.

It may be difficult.

It may take years.

People may not understand it.

But one day, the greatest sadness may not be that you tried and failed.

It may be that you spent your entire life hearing a calling — and never answering.
